And why it can make a big difference to your skin
Learning about skincare can be daunting. There are so many product categories and it can be hard to tell whether a product actually works or if it’s just another marketing ploy. We have been trying a few ampoules and can confirm they can be very effective, but we don’t think everyone needs them. This blog aims to give you an insider’s look at ampoules: what they are, when to use them, and how to add them to your skincare routine.
What is an Ampoule
An ampoule contains an active ingredient that targets a specific skin issue like dryness, dullness, dark patches or signs of ageing. If you have a specific issue and are finding that you need a boost then an ampoule can be the answer. If you know what a serum is, an ampoule is a more concentrated version of a serum. The key difference is that a serum is designed for daily use, while an ampoule is for when you need a little bit extra. An ampoule is used as needed or daily for 1-2 weeks
Ampoules are used to solve a skin problem, so if you don’t have that problem, they won’t be needed. If you are struggling with very dry skin and moisturisers aren’t doing the job or you are feeling run down and your skin is suffering an ampoule can make a meaningful difference in getting your skin back on track.
Texture and Formulation
Ampoules can have a variety of textures but are often very fluid and light so they can penetrate the skin quickly and deeply. Serums can range from very light to gel-based textures, depending on their intended effect (e.g., hydrating, anti-aging) and the type of skin they are formulated for.
Personal experience
I personally like to use ampoules when my skin needs a little extra hydration and a glow-up. Otherwise, I stick to my simple skincare routine when my skin is calm and doesn’t need much attention.
A recent addition to my skincare routine is the Skin1004 Centella Probio-cica Intensive Ampoule that I use before my usual moisturiser (Pyunkang Yul Moisture Cream). It is smooth, easy to apply, absorbs quickly, keeps my skin very hydrated, and doesn’t cause breakouts. Plus, it leaves my skin feeling supple all day long.
How to Use Ampoules
- Cleanse Your Skin: Always start with a clean face to ensure maximum absorption of the products.
- Apply Toner (optional): If you use a toner, apply it after cleansing to prepare your skin for the next steps.
- Use the Ampoule: Apply a few drops distributed across the area and gently work into your skin until absorbed. Please confirm the correct application for the specific ampoule you are using.
- Apply Serum: The serum can complement or enhance the effects of the ampoule, but may not actually be necessary if they do a similar thing. Also, please read the considerations section below for potential issues when combining ampoules with serums.
- Use a Moisturiser: Using a moisturiser after an ampoule helps lock in the moisture and they tend to work well together for an overall better impact than using only one.
- Apply Sunscreen: The sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
Considerations
You can use an ampoule with a serum, but there are a few things to keep in mind to avoid skin reactions like irritation, breakouts, or increased sensitivity to sunlight.
- Ingredient Compatibility: Check the ingredients of both products to ensure they are compatible and won’t cause irritation when used together. For instance, mixing retinol (common in some serums) and vitamin C (common in some ampoules) can sometimes irritate the skin.
- Skin Tolerance: If you have sensitive skin, introducing both products at the same time might be overwhelming. It might be wise to patch-test both products separately and introduce them slowly into your routine.
- Purpose: Understand what each product is intended for and what benefits they offer. This can help you decide if using both is necessary or if one product is sufficient for your skin’s needs.
Conclusion
An ampoule can make a big difference to your skin, but only if it solves a specific skin issue that you have.
